She Is Imperfect: Embracing God's Call Despite Our Flaws By: Madisen Mayfield

May 12, 2026

As leaders, we often feel the pressure to have everything perfectly together. Whether you're leading in ministry, in the workplace, or in your home, the pursuit of perfection can become an overwhelming burden that robs us of joy and prevents us from stepping into God's calling on our lives.

What's Wrong with Perfectionism?

There's nothing wrong with striving for excellence, but perfectionism is different. Perfectionism adds pressure, weight, and burden that can paralyze us from taking action. It's the difference between doing our best and believing we must be flawless.

We often forget that even Mary Poppins, described as "practically perfect in every way," is a fantasy character. That's not how God designed us. The truth is simple: I am imperfect, you are imperfect, we are all imperfect.

How Perfectionism Holds Us Back

Perfectionism creates two major obstacles in our leadership:

-We Don't Know When to Start

We wait for all conditions to be perfect before we begin. We tell God all the reasons why now isn't the right time, why we're not qualified, or why circumstances aren't ideal.

-We Don't Know When to Finish

We struggle to complete projects or make decisions because we keep striving for an impossible standard of perfection.

What Does the Bible Say About Perfect Conditions?

Ecclesiastes 11:4-5 provides powerful insight: "He who observes the wind will not sow, and he who regards the clouds will not reap. As you do not know the way the Spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything."

This passage warns against waiting for ideal conditions to act. If we wait for the perfect time, we may never begin. The verse teaches us that:

- Perfectionism yields procrastination
- Procrastination yields delayed obedience
- Delayed obedience is disobedience

Why God Uses Imperfect People

We are all born into a sinful and broken world. The only perfect person who ever lived was Jesus. Everyone else in Scripture whom God used mightily had flaws, made mistakes, and had imperfect stories.

Think about the lineage of Jesus in Matthew chapter 1. Every generation included imperfect people with messy testimonies, yet God used them for His glory. Moses tried to disqualify himself with excuses, but God still chose him to lead Israel out of Egypt.

God doesn't call us because we're perfect; He calls us because He chooses to use us despite our imperfections.

How to Plant in Imperfect Conditions

When perfectionism threatens to paralyze your leadership, remember these four key principles:

1. Remind Yourself of Your Identity in Christ

Perfectionism ties our worth to what we do rather than who we are in Christ. Your identity isn't based on your performance but on who God created you to be. Ephesians 2:10 reminds us that we are His masterpiece - imperfect people created by a perfect Creator and redeemed by a perfect Savior.

2. Rest in the Truth That God's Grace is Sufficient

"My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9). Your imperfections are the very places where God's power can shine the brightest. It's in our weaknesses that God's strength is most clearly displayed.

3. Relinquish Control and Trust God

Surrender and trust that God will provide what you need. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Instead of striving to have it all together, start surrendering to the One who holds it all together.

4. Reframe Your Mindset and Focus

Shift from striving for perfection to seeking progress and obedience to God's leading. A step of progress is a step of obedience. "Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith" (Hebrews 12:2). Jesus is the perfecter of our faith, not our perfect actions.

The Beauty of Imperfect Obedience

God isn't asking you to be perfect. He's asking you to trust Him. He's looking for women who are willing to step out in faith and allow Him to work through their imperfections.

Life is full of uncertainties, but waiting for perfection isn't the answer. God can work through our efforts, no matter how small or flawed they may seem. He calls us to step out in faith, trusting Him to bless our efforts and use them for His glory.

Application

This week, identify one area where perfectionism has been holding you back from obeying God's call on your life. Instead of waiting for perfect conditions or feeling fully qualified, take one small step of faith and obedience.

Remember: you are not defined by what you do or how well you perform. You are defined by God's grace and love for you. When He calls you, He equips you - not because you're perfect, but because He is perfect.

Ask yourself these questions:

- What is God calling me to "sow" or begin that I've been putting off due to perfectionism?
- How can I shift my focus from my imperfections to God's perfect grace this week?
- What would change in my leadership if I truly believed that God's power is made perfect in my weakness?

You are imperfect, but you are created, chosen, called, and equipped by a perfect God. It's time to lay down the burden of perfection and step into the beautiful freedom of being used by God just as you are.
